A Black Fox Thanksgiving Pairing Guide

Turkey, squash, mushroom stuffing and dark chocolate cake each have a Black Fox spirit that suits them. Explore our Thanksgiving pairing guide, with cocktail recipes straight from our Saskatchewan farm.

Thanksgiving is about gathering around the table, passing the potatoes and, if we’re being honest, finding out who makes the best stuffing.

It’s also a celebration of the harvest, and when your spirits start in the field, it’s nice to bring a little of that harvest into the glass, too. At Black Fox Farm & Distillery, we grow our own grains and many of the ingredients in our spirits right here on our Saskatchewan farm. So when the table is piled high with turkey, roasted vegetables, berries, herbs and all those cozy autumn flavours, there’s plenty to work with.

The secret to a good match? Sometimes you want flavours that mirror each other. Other times, a little contrast is exactly what the meal needs.

Roast turkey + Canadian Gin

Turkey may be the guest of honour, but it doesn’t have to be the heaviest thing on the table.

Our Canadian Gin is bright and aromatic, with zesty orange peel, a delicate touch of anise, and warming notes of pepper and cinnamon. The citrus lifts rich turkey and gravy, while the spice picks up the herbs in your stuffing.

Try it: A Canadian Spritz. Its bright, tart character refreshes the palate between bites.

Canadian Spritz
  • 1.5 oz Black Fox Canadian Gin
  • 0.75 oz simple syrup
  • 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
  • Soda water
  • Ice

Cranberry-orange relish + Winter Berry Gin

Thanksgiving and berries? A natural fit.

Our Winter Berry Gin blends chokecherry, raspberry and haskap into a rich, jammy core, with rhubarb for tart lift and honey for warmth. Alongside tangy cranberry-orange relish, the berries make an easy connection, while the tartness of the cranberry and rhubarb keeps the gin’s richness in check. The orange adds a fresh citrus note.

Try it: A Winter Berry Fizz. Bubbles, berries and a little prairie spirit make a cheerful welcome drink, or something to sip while someone insists they definitely did not eat the last piece of turkey.

Winter Berry Fizz
  • 1 oz Black Fox Cucumber Gin
  • 0.5 oz lime juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • Soda

Roasted squash and sweet potatoes + Oaked Gin

There’s no shortage of sweetness at Thanksgiving: sweet potatoes, squash, roasted carrots, maple glaze. We’re not complaining.

Our Oaked Gin adds a smoky, woody edge. Rested in virgin American white oak beneath prairie skies, it develops the depth to stand up to caramelized vegetables. As squash and sweet potatoes roast, their sugars deepen and their edges turn golden, which suits the gin’s woody character. Its botanicals keep everything from tipping into too sweet.

Try it: An Oaked Gin Sour. Spirit-forward and warming, it’s made for the deeper flavours of the harvest table.

Oaked Gin Sour
  • 2 oz Black Fox Oaked Gin
  • 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 0.75 oz simple syrup
  • 8 drops foaming bitters (or egg white)

Mushroom stuffing and gravy + Mystrelle Whisky Liqueur

Now for the one you may not see coming.

Mystrelle Whisky Liqueur is made with chanterelle mushrooms, so it brings genuine woodland character to the glass, along with rosemary, seasoned wood and warming cinnamon. Caramel and honey add sweetness, while dark cocoa, fennel and a distinctive umami depth linger on the finish. That savoury, earthy side makes it a natural companion for mushrooms on the plate. The rosemary and seasoned wood nod to the herbs and browned flavours in stuffing, and the honeyed sweetness provides a lovely contrast to all that savouriness.

If your stuffing is packed with mushrooms or your gravy has taken an earthy turn, this one is worth exploring.

Try it: Neat or over ice, in a small pour alongside a rich mushroom dish or after dinner. Its sweetness and intensity are best enjoyed with food that can stand up to them. Or stir up a Rusty Fox, which pairs Mystrelle with our Oaked Gin.

Rusty Fox
  • 1 oz Black Fox Oaked Gin
  • 0.5 oz Black Fox Mystrelle Whisky Liqueur
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • Orange peel (twist over the top and rim the glass)

Dark chocolate cake + Black Fox Triticale Whisky

For those who believe there’s always room for chocolate, this one’s for you.

Triticale is a grain that blends the sweetness of wheat with the spice of rye, and it gives our Triticale Whisky its distinctive character. Dark chocolate’s roasted, bittersweet notes suit that grain character and warming spice. The cake’s richness softens the whisky’s intensity, and the whisky adds another layer of depth to every bite. It’s the kind of pairing that has you put down your fork, take a sip and go right back for more.

Try it: A small glass of Triticale Whisky alongside a slice of dark chocolate cake. No elaborate cocktail required. Sometimes the simplest pairing is the one that gets everyone talking.

A little prairie in the glass

This year, try something new alongside an old family favourite. Pour a drink that suits the meal, pass the potatoes, save room for pie and don’t worry too much about whether everything matches perfectly.

After all, the best part of Thanksgiving isn’t what’s in the glass. It’s who’s sitting around the table.

Happy Thanksgiving, from our farm to your table.
