Single Grain vs. Single Malt: What “Single” Really Means

Single grain. Single malt. Two very different whiskies.

The word “single” causes plenty of confusion in whisky. It does not mean one barrel, and it does not mean one grain. It means the whisky was made at one distillery.

What “single” really means

Once that is clear, the distinction comes down to the raw material and the way it shapes the spirit.

Single malt

Single malt whisky is made entirely from malted barley at one distillery. It is often rich, cereal-driven, and textured, and it remains one of Scotland’s defining whisky traditions.

Single grain

Despite its name, single grain whisky does not necessarily come from only one type of grain. It is made at one distillery and can include cereal grains beyond malted barley. The result is often lighter and elegant, with a clear expression of the grain itself.

At Black Fox, our flagship single grain whisky begins with triticale, a distinctive wheat-rye hybrid grown in our own Saskatchewan fields.

A whisky shaped by Saskatchewan

Triticale is more than an ingredient. It is shaped by the soil, sun, wind, snow, microbes, and changing seasons of the place where it grows. Those conditions influence the grain, and the grain shapes the spirit. That connection between flavour and place is terroir.

We are not trying to imitate Scotch tradition. We are building a whisky rooted here, in Saskatchewan.

From field to bottle

Black Fox is an estate distillery, one of a small number where the same family grows the grain, distills the spirit, and ages it on site. Every bottle can be traced back to a barrel, a batch, and ultimately a field.

Not better or worse, simply different

Single malt versus single grain is not a question of which is better. It is a question of grain, place, process, and flavour.
